During the production of the blockbuster franchise Pirates of the Caribbean in 2004, Johnny Depp discovered a remote corner of the Bahamas that would eventually become his personal sanctuary. Captivated by the natural beauty of the Exuma Land and Sea Park, the actor opted to purchase the 45-acre island for USD 3.6 million. Describing the location as a place where one’s pulse rate drops significantly, Depp has long referred to the property as his ultimate escape from the pressures of Hollywood.

The island serves as a private retreat where the actor engages in creative pursuits such as painting, reading, and playing music. To maintain the environmental integrity of the region, the property was developed with sustainability in mind, featuring solar energy systems and alternative grid technology. The infrastructure includes a ranch-style main residence offering panoramic views, alongside a bamboo yurt, a beach house, and a circular suite designed for hosting guests.

Personalized Landmarks and Nautical Travel

Beyond the architectural features, the island is notable for its six private beaches, each named by Depp to honor significant figures in his life. These include Gonzo Beach, a tribute to the late author and friend Hunter S. Thompson, and Brando Beach, named in honor of his mentor, Marlon Brando. Other locations on the island were named for his children, Lily-Rose and Jack, as well as his former partner, Vanessa Paradis. Additionally, one area was named Amber’s Cove during his relationship with Amber Heard, with whom he finalized a divorce in 2017.

To facilitate travel to his Caribbean retreat, the actor commissioned a 156-foot yacht named Vajoliroja. The vessel, which cost an estimated USD 8 million to customize, features pirate-themed decor and flies the Jolly Roger flag. The name of the boat was derived from a combination of the names of his family members at the time, including his own, his partner’s, and his children’s names.
